Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic exercises are specific exercises meant for correcting specific problems. The focus of therapeutic exercise is to regain flexibility, strength, and endurance related to specific physical problems where stiffness, weakness and lack of endurance are contributing factors.

Therapeutic exercise aims to improve, restore, and prevent further loss of physical function. It can also improve a patient’s overall health, fitness, and sense of well-being. Essentially, when our bodies lose the flexibility, strength and endurance it once had, we can experience pain, with or without injury.

It's logical, therefore, in many cases, to use therapeutic exercises to restore normal flexibility, strength, balance and endurance to help in the recovery process. In our office, all exercises are supervised for safety and effectiveness.

Therapeutic exercises are classified into three major categories:

  • 1)Endurance training, 2)Resistance training, 3)Flexibility training
  • The ultimate goal of therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation is to help you re-acquire a better level of physical fitness. Some therapeutic exercises can be performed at home. But first, you must demonstrate an adequate level of understanding and competency in safely performing your exercises under supervision in our rehab area.
  • As an example, with low back pain and sciatica, patients often have a weak core. These problems usually develop gradually. Over time, this weakness adds additional strain to the low back and discs. The additional strain causes the discs to breakdown and begin to bulge, possibly leading to disc herniation. And, disc herniation is the leading cause of back pain and sciatica. So, a thorough treatment plan must include core strengthening to help correct the underlying contributing factor of core weakness, which lead to the initial breakdown.
